A public health crisis, police brutality, an economic recession, food insecurity, and gun violence. These are topics being discussed every day in New York City. However, for Council Member Vanessa L Gibson, these are not just headlines but are genuine issues for her residents in the16th Council District that encompasses Claremont, Concourse, Concourse Village, Highbridge, Morris Heights, Mount Eden, and Morrisania in the Bronx.
As a protege of Assembly MemberAurelia Greene, Council Member Gibson began her public service career in 2001 as an intern and would later become Assembly Member Greene’s District Manager.
In 2009, Ms. Gibsonwould succeed her former boss and mentor in the Assembly with an ambitious plan to improve residents’ quality of life in the 77th Assembly District. In 2013, Ms. Gibson would then succeed another prominent African – American woman elected official and become the Council Member for the 16th district, where she served as the first African – American female Public Safety chair over seeing one of the country’s largest police forces. During her tenure as an elected official, Ms.Gibson has overseen natural disasters, public health emergencies, and numerous other crises.
