Discovering the Rich Heritage of Black Italians

Welcome to our latest edition of the newsletter, where we embark on a fascinating journey to explore the often overlooked history and cultural significance of Black Italians. Italy’s cultural diversity is widely acknowledged, yet the presence and contributions of Black Italians have frequently been marginalized or forgotten. Today, we celebrate their stories and shed light on their vibrant heritage

**African Roots and Contemporary Identity**

Italy’s Black community comprises individuals of African descent who have settled in the country or have ancestral ties to Italy. These include people of African heritage who were born and raised in Italy, as well as those who migrated to the country over the years. Out of the 60 million people living in Italy, there are only about 1 Million African Italians living in Italian households amongst the country, making them a significant minority. Despite this, the contributions and experiences of Black Italians play a significant role in shaping contemporary Italian identity

**A Deep Historical Connection**

Contrary to popular belief, Italy has a long history of interactions with the African continent, dating back to ancient times. The presence of North African populations in Sicily and Southern Italy can be traced back to the Arab conquests during the Middle Ages. Moreover, Italy’s historical connections with the Ethiopian Empire and other African territories have further enriched the nation’s cultural tapestry

-This graph shows the percent of racial discrimination by group in Italy, with Skin Color being the primary reason for discrimination at 31%, which includes Black Italians.

**Art, Literature, and Music**

Black Italians have left indelible imprints on various artistic expressions throughout history. From the paintings of Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, known as Sandro Botticelli, to the literary works of Igiaba Scego and Amara Lakhous, Black Italians have enriched the cultural landscape. In the realm of music, singers and musicians like Mina Mazzini, Nina Zilli, and M’Barka Ben Taleb have captivated audiences with their exceptional talents.

**The Fight for Recognition**

Despite their contributions to Italian society, Black Italians have faced challenges in gaining recognition and full acceptance. Discrimination, stereotyping, and the perpetuation of negative narratives have hindered the progress of the community. However, Black Italians, alongside advocates and allies, continue to fight for equal rights, social justice, and the dismantling of systemic barriers. Over time, Italy is making many changes to try and make the society less discriminatory through legislation, anti- discrimination projects, education, awareness, and public discourse. Italy has started by putting laws in place that prohibit discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and nationality. These laws aim to protect individuals from discriminatory practices in areas such as employment, housing, and education. Adding on, Italy also has institutions such as the National Office against Racial Discrimination (UNAR) that work to combat racism and push for equality. Also, efforts have been made to promote diversity and inclusion in education, as schools and universities have implemented programs to foster intercultural understanding, promote tolerance, and address issues related to racism and discrimination. To finalize, debates surrounding racism and diversity have gained attention in the public sphere. Social media has been a great part of this as well, promoting inclusivity and antidiscrimination

**Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion**

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in Italy. Organizations and initiatives are emerging to provide platforms for Black Italians to express their culture, history, and experiences. Film festivals, art exhibitions, and cultural events are bringing to light the richness of Black Italian heritage and challenging preconceptions

**Embracing the Future**

As we move forward, it is crucial to recognize and celebrate the diversity that Black Italians bring to our society. By promoting inclusivity, raising awareness, and amplifying their voices, we can create a future where every individual, regardless of their background, feels valued and accepted. Together, we can build not only a more inclusive Italy, but also a world that honors multicultural heritage

The history and cultural contributions of Black Italians have long remained hidden from the mainstream narrative. Yet, by acknowledging their past and present contributions, we can forge a more inclusive future. Let us appreciate the richness and diversity that Black Italians bring to our society, and work towards a future where everyone’s heritage is celebrated and respected

Lorenzo’s Thoughts

My name is Lorenzo Berti Laragione, and I am from Italian descent. I go to a small town in Italy all summer, and I have viewed firsthand how life in Italy is not only for Black Italians, but for people of non white descent. The area I go to is approximately 98% white, so seeing someone that is not white is usually a rare occurrence for the vast majority of the townspeople. As a result of this, there is much racial prejudice towards people of color, including stereotypes that any outsiders are dirtyand parents not wanting their white children around children of color. Despite this, things are getting better with time as people (ex: Popular Black Italian Tik Tok Star Khaby Lame) are using the widespread influence social media has to stop racial stigmas as much as possible. Khaby lame has gained over 2 billion views and 145 Million followers on social media, with about 35% of his followers being white Italians. Personally, I have met very few black Italians, but I am friends with people from a lot of races when presented the opportunity. If I were to meet any Black Italians, I would definitely go out there and try to become friends with them as much as I could. I am interested in making my Italian friend group as diverse as my American one, so I would definitely be interested in making Black Italian friends. I suggest to all of the youth around the world reading this to go out and try to find not only Black Italians, but different people from around the world to become friends with not only for the valuable experiences and cultures you can learn, but in order to help create a better, inclusive society. Therefore, I believe that people should continue to raise awareness about the heritage and struggles of Black Italians in order to prevent racism in Italy

-You can clearly see the difference between my Italian friends (above) and my American friends (below), in which my Italian friends are 100% white and Italian, while my American friends consists of a variety of races and nationalities.
